South Korean investigators arrest impeached President Yoon

SEOUL – South Korean authorities arrested impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol on Wednesday over insurrection allegations, with the embattled leader saying he agreed to comply with what he called an illegal probe to avoid “bloodshed.” His arrest, the first ever for an incumbent president, is the latest head-spinning development for one of Asia’s most vibrant democracies even though the country has a history of prosecuting and imprisoning former leaders. Since lawmakers voted to stand him down after his short-lived declaration of martial law on Dec. 3, Yoon has been holed up at his hillside residence, guarded by a small army of personal security that blocked a previous arrest attempt. Fire-hit LA faces new peril as dangerous winds ramp up

Los Angeles – Powerful winds forecast for late Tuesday night threatened to whip up massive fires that are still burning around Los Angeles in a tragedy that has killed at least 24 people and badly shaken the city. A week after blazes erupted and spread uncontained, forecasters predicted “particularly dangerous” Santa Ana winds would spike the wildfire threat anew for already exhausted firefighters. “Stay aware of your surroundings. Be ready to evacuate. Avoid anything that can spark a fire,” the National Weather Service warned. Source link

BOJ deputy chief signals chance of rate hike next week

Bank of Japan Deputy Gov. Ryozo Himino has signaled the possibility of an interest rate hike next week by saying that the board will be discussing it, making it clear that the option is on the table. “In conducting monetary policy, it is difficult but essential to judge the right timing,” Himino said Tuesday in a speech to local business leaders in Yokohama. “The board will have discussion to decide whether to raise the policy rate or not, based on the outlook to be compiled” at the monetary policy meeting between Jan. 23 and 24, he said. The comments highlight that the BOJ isn’t ruling out raising borrowing costs this month, with most BOJ watchers seeing it coming in either January or March. Himino also said there are various risks both for the upside and downside, and echoed Gov. Kazuo Ueda by saying momentum for this year’s wage hikes and U.S. economic policy under a new administration warrant attention. Source link

How China is erasing Tibetan culture, one child at a time

Across China’s west, the Communist Party is placing children in boarding schools in a drive to assimilate a generation of Tibetans into the national mainstream and mold them into citizens loyal to the party. Tibetan rights activists, as well as experts working for the United Nations, have said that the party is systematically separating Tibetan children from their families to erase Tibetan identity and to deepen China’s control of a people who historically have resisted Beijing’s rule. The activists have estimated that around three-quarters of Tibetan students age 6 and older — and others even younger — are in residential schools that teach largely in Mandarin, replacing the Tibetan language, culture and Buddhist beliefs that the children once absorbed at home and in village schools. When China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, visited one such school in the summer, he inspected a dormitory that appeared freshly painted and as neat as an army barracks. He walked into a classroom where Tibetan students, listening to a lecture on Communist Party thought, stood and applauded to welcome him. Source link

Antioxidant found in broccoli, celery suppresses gray hair in mice

A research team from Nagoya University and other institutions has confirmed that luteolin, an antioxidant found in broccoli and celery, can help suppress the progression of gray hair in mice. The findings were published on Saturday in the international journal Antioxidants, with findings showing that both oral intake and topical application were effective. The team hopes that further testing on humans will lead to the development of a drug for preventing or reducing gray hair. Source link

Special counsel report says Trump would have been convicted in election case

Jack Smith, the special counsel who indicted President-elect Donald Trump on charges of seeking to cling to power after losing the 2020 election, said in a final report released early Tuesday that he believed the evidence was sufficient to convict Trump in a trial if his success in the 2024 election had not made it impossible for the prosecution to continue. “The department’s view that the Constitution prohibits the continued indictment and prosecution of a president is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the government’s proof or the merits of the prosecution, which the office stands fully behind,” Smith wrote. He continued: “Indeed, but for Mr. Trump’s election and imminent return to the presidency, the office assessed that the admissible evidence was sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial.” Source link

‘Mind of its own’: Raducanu advances despite wayward serve

Melbourne – A rusty Emma Raducanu said her serve felt like it had a mind of its own at times on Tuesday as she racked up 15 double faults in a 7-6(4) 7-6(2) first-round victory over Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Australian Open. The 22-year-old Briton, who has dealt with a string of injuries since capturing her only Grand Slam title at the 2021 U.S. Open, returned to action for the first time since November with her win over the 26th seed at Melbourne Park. Raducanu has often struggled to get going after returning from spells away from the game but she was surprised by how her serve misbehaved, with one of her double faults coming as she held a 30-0 lead when serving for the match. Medvedev destroys net camera in huge scare against Thai wildcard

Melbourne – Daniil Medvedev destroyed his racket and a net camera in a midmatch meltdown as he survived a huge scare against Thai wildcard Kasidit Samrej to reach the Australian Open second round on Tuesday. The frustrated Russian whacked his racket five times into the net after dropping serve in the third set before rallying to claim the match 6-2 4-6 3-6 6-1 6-2 in the afternoon sun at Rod Laver Arena. The tantrum earned fifth seed Medvedev a code violation for racket abuse and held up play before the fourth set as staff swept up debris from the court. Source link
