Family registers to incorporate phonetic readings of names from end-May

A revised family register law in Japan, requiring the inclusion of phonetic readings of personal names, will come into force on May 26 this year. In line with the revision, citizens who wish to register phonetic readings that differ from those listed on their certificates of residence must notify their municipal governments within one year of the law’s implementation. Certain restrictions will apply to unconventional name readings that significantly deviate from traditional interpretations of kanji characters. Source link

BYD chalks up new record as it narrows EV sales gap with Tesla

China’s BYD enjoyed a year-end surge to push total sales to 4.25 million passenger cars last year, narrowing its gap with Tesla as the two vie for the crown of top-selling electric-vehicle maker of 2024. The Shenzhen-based carmaker, which stopped making vehicles entirely powered by fossil fuels in 2022, hit a new monthly sales record in December, spurred on by subsidies and offering extra incentives to buyers. BYD sold 509,440 plug-in hybrid and pure-electric passenger vehicles in December, the company said Wednesday. The figure includes 207,734 EVs, taking the annual tally of battery-powered car sales to 1.76 million. Overall annual sales increased 41% year-on-year. Source link

Imperial Palace hosts New Year ceremony

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako received New Year’s greetings from other imperial family members and the country’s leaders, including Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, at a ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Wednesday. Imperial family members, including Crown Prince Akishino, the younger brother of the emperor, and his wife, Crown Princess Kiko, delivered statements to celebrate the start of the New Year to the emperor and empress, followed by similar greetings by Ishiba, his Cabinet ministers and the heads of both chambers of parliament. On Thursday, the imperial family will greet the public at the Imperial Palace, a New Year’s event that will be held for the first time in two years. The 2024 event was canceled due to the powerful earthquake that hit the Noto Peninsula in central Japan on the first day of the year. With no advance registration required for this year’s event, the palace will be open to anyone who wishes to enter, just as it was before the COVID-19 pandemic. Prince Hisahito, the son of Akishino and Kiko who turned 18 last year and became an adult member of the imperial family, is set to start attending events at the palace after a coming-of-age ceremony to be held for him following his high school graduation this spring. He did not join the New Year’s ceremony on Wednesday and will not appear at Thursday’s greeting event. Source link

Israel’s ex-defense chief Gallant says he’s leaving parliament

Former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced Wednesday that he would soon resign from parliament, a move likely to make it a bit easier for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to muster majorities in some crucial votes. Gallant was fired as defense minister by Netanyahu on Nov. 5, due to what the premier described as “significant gaps” between the men over the war. They had clashed over pursuing a cease-fire deal with Hamas as well as moves taken by the security Cabinet. The former minister, who had kept his seat in parliament, said he would now be taking a time-out after a decade in politics. For Netanyahu, Gallant’s resignation is good news as any replacement would be more likely to support the ruling coalition in parliament. Although on paper the coalition controls 68 of 120 seats, in practice, some members have recently rebelled over budgetary and policy issues. As a result, Netanyahu has struggled at times to muster needed votes. On Tuesday, the prime minister was rushed to parliament from a hospital, where he had undergone prostate removal surgery on Sunday, out of fear that a crucial budget law would fail without him. The law passed by a single vote. Gallant abstained. In his speech Wednesday, Gallant said Netanyahu fired him because the former defense minister had been pushing to draft Orthodox Jewish men into the military. Such men are automatically exempted from service for decades, but the long war that followed Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks in 2023 has changed some attitudes toward the exception. Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, who replaced Gallant, have been pushing against the expanded draft, as some Orthodox politicians have threatened to topple the government if their constituents are forced into military service. The prime minister has several weeks to reach agreements with them. Otherwise, they may withdraw their support for the 2025 budget, which, if it fails to pass by March 31, would automatically topple the government. Gallant, 66, said in a televised statement that during his time in the defense ministry he led the security establishment to military victories on seven fronts. “Throughout the war, I insisted on maintaining and deepening the strategic partnership with our great ally the U.S. Even in a time of political discord, there is no substitute for this alliance, which provides us with military aid, international support and creates deterrence in the Middle East,” he said. FBI probes New Orleans truck ramming as ISIS-inspired terrorist attack

NEW ORLEANS – A U.S. Army veteran with an ISIS flag on his truck swerved around makeshift barriers and plowed into New Orleans’ crowded French Quarter on New Year’s Day, killing 15 people in an attack officials believe was carried out with the help of others. The suspect, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, a U.S. citizen from Texas who once served in Afghanistan, was killed in a shootout with police after ramming the crowd. The attack, which injured 30 other people, took place around 3:15 a.m. (0915 GMT) near the intersection of Canal and Bourbon Streets, a historic tourist destination known for its music and bars where crowds were celebrating the new year. Police and political leaders vowed to capture any accomplices. With the perceived danger ongoing, officials postponed the Sugar Bowl, a classic college football game played in New Orleans each year on New Year’s Day. The game between Notre Dame and Georgia was delayed for 24 hours until Thursday night as police swept parts of the city looking for possible explosive devices and converged on neighborhoods in search of clues. The city will also host the NFL Super Bowl on Feb. 9. The FBI said that police found weapons and a potential explosive device in the vehicle and that two potential explosive devices were found in the French Quarter and rendered safe. An ISIS flag was found on the rented vehicle, prompting an investigation into possible links to terrorist organizations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. “We do not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible. We are aggressively running down every lead, including those of his known associates,” FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Alethea Duncan told reporters. Asked how many potential accomplices the FBI was looking into, she said it was a “range of suspects” and urged anyone who had contact with Jabbar in the previous 72 hours to contact authorities. Biden condemns attack U.S. President Joe Biden condemned what he called a “despicable” act and said investigators were looking into whether there might be a link to a Tesla truck fire outside a Trump hotel in Las Vegas. So far, there was no evidence linking the two events, Biden said. “The FBI also reported to me that mere hours before the attack, he posted videos on social media indicating that he’s inspired by ISIS, expressing the desire to kill,” Biden said of the New Orleans suspect. CNN, citing officials briefed on the investigation, said the suspect recorded videos in which he mentioned dreams about joining ISIS. Officials told CNN the suspect, obscured by darkness in the videos, spoke about his divorce and plans to gather his family for a “celebration” with the intent of killing them. He later changed his plans and said that he joined ISIS, CNN said. ISIS — often called Islamic State or ISIL — is a Muslim militant group that once imposed a reign of terror over millions of people in Iraq and Syria until it collapsed following a sustained military campaign by a U.S.-led coalition. Public records show Jabbar worked in real estate in Houston. In a promotional video posted four years ago, Jabbar describes himself as born and reared in Beaumont, a city about 80 miles (130 km) east of Houston, and saying he spent 10 years in the U.S. military as a human resources and IT specialist. Jabbar was in the regular Army from March 2007 until January 2015 and then in the Army Reserve from January 2015 until July 2020, an Army spokesperson said. He deployed to Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010 and held the rank of Staff Sergeant at the end of service. ‘Screaming and debris’ Mike and Kimberly Strickland of Mobile, Alabama, said they were in New Orleans for a bluegrass concert and heading back to their hotel just 20 yards (meters) from where the truck made an impact with some pedestrians. “There were people everywhere,” Kimberly Strickland said in an interview. “You just heard this squeal and the rev of the engine and this huge loud impact and then the people screaming and debris — just metal — the sound of crunching metal and bodies.” About 400 officers were on duty in the French Quarter at the time of the incident, including a number of officers who had established a makeshift barrier to prevent anyone from driving into the pedestrian zone, police said. “This is not just an act of terrorism, this is evil,” Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick told reporters. She said two police officers were wounded by gunfire and in stable condition. In response to vehicle attacks on pedestrian malls around the world, New Orleans was in the process of removing and replacing the steel barriers known as bollards that restrict vehicle traffic in the Bourbon Street area. Construction began in November and was due to be completed in time for the Super Bowl, officials said. In the meantime, police vehicles and officers attempted to provide a barrier, Kirkpatrick said. “This particular terrorist drove around, onto the sidewalk and got around the hard target,” Kirkpatrick said. While mass shootings are more commonly a threat in the United States, vehicle rammings have been used to kill civilians in the U.S. and around the world. Last month in Germany, a 50-year-old man was charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder after police said he plowed a car through crowds at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, killing five people and injuring scores. After historic year, the Bank of Japan ambles into 2025

Two or three rate increases are expected in 2025 from the Bank of Japan, possibly taking the benchmark to 1% for the first time in three decades. “There seems to be a widespread view that the BOJ raising rates two more times this year wouldn’t be considered monetary-policy tightening given the current level of interest rates,” said Tsuyoshi Ueno, a senior economist at NLI Research Institute. “While maintaining its free hand and monitoring economic conditions, I think the BOJ is contemplating two rate increases.” Possible spanners in the works are many. They include unexpected movements in the yen and U.S. economic policy under Donald Trump once he becomes president on Jan. 20. Central bank officials continue to suggest that they are in no hurry to make a move higher given the uncertainty in the world, especially in the United States. Source link

Japan’s ¥10 trillion startup investment target more improbable than ever

In 2022, Japan set out to increase startup investment by a factor of 10 in five years. It’s nowhere near achieving that. Total investment in startups in the country has been falling since that target was set. The country is not even a tenth of the way to getting to the government’s 2027 target of ¥10 trillion ($63 billion) of investments in startups in a single year. Source link

Nippon Steel offers U.S. government veto power in bid for U.S. Steel approval

Nippon Steel offered to give the U.S. government a veto over any reduction in U.S. Steel’s production capacity in a proposal that marks a last-ditch effort to win President Joe Biden’s approval for its takeover of the iconic American company, according to a person familiar with the matter. Shares of U.S. Steel surged by the most in a year. The proposal is aimed at addressing concerns raised by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. (CFIUS), which said last week that the Japanese company’s takeover of U.S. Steel would lead to a decline in American steel output, said the person who asked not to be named because the information is private. The Washington Post reported on the proposal earlier. Shares of U.S. Steel rose as much as 14% Tuesday in New York after the report, the biggest intraday jump since December 2023. The shares were trading at $34.19 as of 3:59 p.m. in New York, still well below Nippon Steel’s $55-a-share offer. Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel didn’t respond to requests for comment. The White House referred to an earlier statement, saying it was reviewing the CFIUS report and declining further comment. Nippon Steel’s proposed $14.1 billion acquisition of U.S. Steel moved a step closer to being blocked last week after the U.S. national security panel deadlocked on its review and left the final decision with Biden, who has repeatedly indicated his opposition to the deal. The president is said to still be planning on blocking it, though the White House has never said flatly that he would. He has 15 days from the referral to announce a decision and has repeatedly said U.S. Steel should remain domestically owned and operated. President-elect Donald Trump has said he would block the acquisition, but the timeline means it will be resolved before he takes office. The agreement, first announced in December 2023, became an issue in the U.S. presidential election because of opposition from the influential United Steelworkers union. Yet some local union officials, mayors and federal lawmakers have signaled support and called on Biden to allow the deal to proceed. Source link
