Spurs coach Gregg Popovich addresses team, will not return this season

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich met with the team Thursday for the first time since his stroke and informed the players he is not returning this season. “I’ve decided not to return to the sidelines this season,” Popovich said in a statement through the team. “Mitch Johnson and his staff have done a wonderful job, and the resolve and professionalism the players have shown, sticking together during a challenging season, has been outstanding. I will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future.” ESPN reported last week that the team expected to finish the campaign without Popovich, who suffered what the Spurs called a mild stroke on Nov. 2 just five games into the season. Johnson, the interim coach, has led the Spurs to a 22-30 mark (the team is 24-33 overall) in the absence of Popovich, who has coached the team since the 1996-97 season and won five NBA championships. Popovich’s plans for next season are unknown. Popovich, the winningest coach in NBA history, turned 76 on Jan. 28. He owns a career record of 1,407-843 in 2,250 games with the Spurs. The three-time NBA Coach of the Year was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023. Source link

How Shibuya reduced cigarette litter by 90%

This is a sponsored story, created and edited exclusively by Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Tokyo Updates website. Tokyo is known for having little litter on the streets despite being a tourist city, but a project to further reduce its waste by making “ballot” smoking areas called Ask the Tobacco is under way. We spoke with Goro Yamashita, CEO of the company behind the initiative, cosodo inc. Enticing smokers to use ashtrays In 2019, Yamashita began working to solve the social issues posed by tobacco, such as the littering of cigarette butts and passive smoking. First, he researched where cigarette butt litter was the most prevalent in Tokyo. “There was a limit to how much research we could do on our own, so we created a website where people could post pictures of cigarette butts they found on the street along with their location information. The first place we found a lot of them was in Shibuya Center-Gai. We picked them up along with other trash as volunteers, but only an hour after we finished, there were already fresh ones, which underscored the need for smoking areas.” The questions are designed to be simple and fun for everyone. | Courtesy of cosodo inc. Yamashita thought that setting up smoking areas along with a system that encourages smokers to use them would increase their effectiveness. This led to the creation of Ask the Tobacco, a ballot smoking area. The ashtrays ask either-or questions such as “If you were to travel in time, which would you choose? A) The Cretaceous Period without dinosaurs, or B) The 25th century without hope” and “Which would you prefer? A) Everlasting love with no money, or B) Becoming an overnight billionaire but forever alone.” Smokers can vote by tossing their cigarette butts into the A or B slot in the ashtrays. “This makes it fun to use the ashtray. Instead of forcing smokers to do what you want them to do, we wanted to create a system that encourages them to do so. This concept is called ‘nudging’ and has become a popular business tool lately, such as putting footprints on the floor in front of supermarket checkout counters to encourage people to maintain social spacing when standing in line.” Food-related trash also reduced These smoking areas have been installed at 12 locations nationwide, including five in Tokyo, with considerations for the surrounding areas to prevent the smoke from spreading outside and to address the problem of cigarette butts overflowing. The company handles most of the planning, installation and regular cleaning. Yamashita explains the impact of this initiative. “In Shibuya, we counted cigarette butts every day for one week before and after it was installed, and the litter was reduced by 90% overall. When we talked to the smokers at the site, they said, ‘Of course, if there is an ashtray, I throw it there’ or ‘I chose this place to smoke,’ so these smoking areas definitely reduce cigarette butt littering. Moreover, it also led to a decrease in the large amount of food-related waste found there. The installation of the ballot smoking area may have acted as a deterrent.” Goro Yamashita is a smoker himself. | Yoko Akiyoshi Their impact is gradually spreading: “We heard that elementary school students found out about the ballot smoking areas and created trash cans that work in a similar way. There was one kid who came to interview us and make a report on our efforts as part of their summer homework. We received a request from high school students in Nagano Prefecture who wanted to set up a ballot smoking area in their town. We did so for a limited time and reduced discarded cigarette butts by 40%. A city hall in Tokyo even received a phone call from a citizen asking what it was.” These efforts have gradually raised awareness for reducing cigarette butt litter. Looking ahead, Yamashita says, “At the moment, we are operating the ballot smoking areas using income from other businesses, and this project itself does not generate any revenue, therefore we cannot increase the number of smoking areas rapidly. However, I believe that more people will become aware of problems such as cigarette butt littering and passive smoking through this initiative, and that will lead to solving these problems.” Creating an inclusive city The company also created smoking areas called The Tobacco at 92 locations nationwide, with more than 60 of them in Tokyo. They are elaborately decorated to create a relaxing smoking space and are frequented by foreign tourists among others. “The Tobacco 2:50.76” near Yurakucho Station, Tokyo. | Courtesy of cosodo inc. “Tokyo has a long tradition of omotenashi (hospitality). Many families used to always keep their entrances clean and serve tea to the salespeople who came to their homes. I think one of the reasons why we have an increasing number of foreign tourists these days is that people sense that mentality in Tokyo. “I believe there is so little garbage in the streets because we do not want to make other people uncomfortable. I want this city to be a place where both smokers and non-smokers respect each other when it comes to smoking. I think this will lead to the creation of an inclusive city where everyone can feel comfortable.” Translation by Toshio Endo Source link

Air safety reporting under scrutiny as crashes lie unresolved

SEOUL/PARIS – Next month marks three years since a China Eastern jet plunged into a hillside, killing 132 people, with relatives still waiting to learn what caused China’s deadliest air disaster in three decades. It is one of dozens of accidents worldwide in which investigators have yet to issue a final report designed to help prevent new accidents, despite a target of one year. While recent deadly crashes in Kazakhstan, South Korea and the United States and the non-fatal flip of a crash-landed jet in Canada have thrust safety into the spotlight, the industry is worried that too many past accidents remain unresolved. 14 people from seven NPB teams admit to patronizing online casinos

Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball Organization said Thursday that 14 people from seven teams, including players and team officials, have voluntarily admitted to patronizing online casinos in the past. The NPB had called on its 12 baseball teams to have their members voluntarily report their use of online casinos, after the Orix Buffaloes announced on Feb. 21 that pitcher Taisuke Yamaoka participated in a poker tournament run by a foreign casino website. It did not disclose the names of the 14 people, all of whom used online casinos after February 2022, meaning that the three-year statute of limitations on simple gambling has yet to run out. In addition to the 14 individuals, there were reports of cases in which the statute of limitations had expired under the Penal Code, but they were not subject to the disclosure this time. The NPB said there have been no reports of gambling on baseball, which is prohibited by the Japanese professional baseball agreement. It will leave it up to each team on whether to lodge police reports or mete out punishments. “We take this very seriously,” said Katsuhiko Nakamura, secretary-general of the NPB, adding that the NPB will take necessary measures in the wake of the disclosures. The organization will continue to accept voluntary reports for the time being. Source link

Services to millions of people collapse as USAID cuts contracts worldwide

LONDON/JOHANNESBURG/GENEVA – U S.-funded projects worldwide, including those providing lifesaving care for millions of people in countries such as Sudan and South Africa, received termination notices on Thursday, sending shock waves across the global aid community. The latest cancellations come as U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration nears completion of a review to ensure that grants are aligned with his “America First” agenda after ordering a 90-day pause on all foreign aid in January to assess whether projects were consistent with his policy aims. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had dismissed concerns that Washington was ending foreign aid, saying waivers had been provided to life-saving services. Source link

Trump dodges plea from Britain’s Starmer for Ukraine security guarantee

WASHINGTON – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a minerals deal with Ukraine is the security guarantee Kyiv needs against Russia, brushing aside a plea from British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for a commitment of more U.S. military support. Starmer, who was meeting Trump at the White House for the first time since the U.S. leader started his second term, turned on the charm, saying peace in Ukraine had only become possible because of Trump. In the Oval Office, Starmer handed a letter of invitation from King Charles for a state visit. Trump accepted. A date hasn’t been set. Source link
