Pohang, South Korea – Smoke billows from chimneys as factories churn in South Korea’s steelmaking heartland, now under threat from Washington’s harsh new tariffs on the port city’s largest export. DeepSeek drives $1.3 trillion China stock rally as funds pile in

DeepSeek’s breakthrough in artificial intelligence is helping drive a rotation of stock funds back into China from India. Hedge funds have been piling into Chinese equities at the fastest pace in months as bullishness on the DeepSeek-driven technology rally adds to hopes for more economic stimulus. In contrast, India is suffering a record exodus of cash on concerns over waning macro growth, slowing corporate earnings and expensive stock valuations. China’s onshore and offshore equity markets have added more than $1.3 trillion in total value in just the past month amid such reallocations, while India’s market has shrunk by more than $720 billion. The MSCI China Index is on track to outperform its Indian counterpart for a third-straight month, the longest such streak in two years. Source link

Trump suggests no laws are broken if he’s ‘saving his country’

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday posted on social media a single sentence that appears to encapsulate his attitude as he tests the nation’s legal and constitutional boundaries in the process of upending the federal government and punishing his perceived enemies. “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law,” Trump wrote, first on his social media platform Truth Social, then on social platform X. By late afternoon, Trump had pinned the statement to the top of his Truth Social feed, making it clear it was not a passing thought but one he wanted people to absorb. The official White House account on X posted his message in the evening. Source link

The NHL could’ve had a good year if not for tariffs

The trade war between the U.S. and Canada is temporarily on ice, but the hard feelings aren’t. When The Star-Spangled Banner is played before National Hockey League games in Canada, the boos still occasionally rain down. It’s made the NHL’s inaugural 4 Nation’s Face-Off tournament, which started on Wednesday, a bit awkward. Canadian fans have good reason to feel aggrieved. U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of tariffs have destabilized the Canadian dollar and it’s hurting the competitiveness of businesses there. Sports aren’t immune to the disruption and professional hockey north of the border is set up to take the biggest hit. For starters, the NHL is the only major U.S.-based league that has a substantial number of franchises in Canada. While Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association each have one team there, seven of the hockey league’s 32 clubs call Canada home. Source link

Japan’s Iwaya vows to push ahead with sanctions against Russia

Munich – Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya said Saturday that he told his Group of Seven counterparts at the day’s meeting in Munich, Germany, that Japan remains resolved to strongly promote support for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia over its invasion of the neighboring country. Iwaya made the remark after U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his eagerness to achieve an early ceasefire in Ukraine through direct negotiations with Russia. Regarding the situation in Palestine, Iwaya said at the Group of Seven meeting that Japan will play an active role not only in providing urgent humanitarian assistance but also in offering medium — and long-term support for recovery and reconstruction, according to the minister. On Saturday, Iwaya held talks with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and agreed to seek to deepen relations between Japan and NATO based on the recognition that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions is inseparable. Iwaya also met with Jordan’s foreign minister, Ayman Safadi. In the meeting, the Japanese foreign minister emphasized the importance of steady implementation of the ceasefire reached between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas and said Japan will work closely with Jordan toward a “two-state solution” in which Palestine and Israel coexist. Taliban officials may visit Japan

New Delhi – Several high-ranking officials of the Taliban-led interim Afghan government, including Abdul Latif Nazari, deputy minister of economy, may visit Japan as early as Sunday, it has been learned. It is believed to be the first visit to Japan by a senior official of the interim administration since it took power in 2021. The Japanese government has not recognized the interim government. According to Japanese government sources, the Nippon Foundation, a public interest incorporated foundation in Tokyo, invited the Taliban officials to Japan. While the detailed schedule is unknown, the Taliban officials are expected to have talks with Japanese government officials, possibly discussing measures to support Afghanistan, which is in a difficult economic situation. Nazari said on X on Saturday that he would go to Japan, noting that the Taliban-led administration is seeking dignified engagement with the world in order to be a prosperous and active member of the international community. The interim government has hammered out measures to suppress women based on its extreme interpretation of Islamic law. No country has yet recognized it as a legitimate government of Afghanistan due to concerns over human rights abuses. Source link
